Content drip means unlocking content on a schedule — “lesson 1 is available immediately, lesson 2 unlocks after 7 days, lesson 3 after 14 days.” This is how most online courses, coaching programs, and gated content libraries work. Students pay once (or subscribe), and content becomes available progressively.
WooCommerce doesn’t do this natively. WooCommerce can sell a downloadable product (a file), and Memberships can restrict access to pages. But neither provides a built-in drip sequence with timed releases, progress tracking, quizzes, or a student dashboard. You need a Learning Management System (LMS) plugin.
The main options:
Sensei LMS is Automattic’s own learning platform (the same company behind WooCommerce). It integrates with WooCommerce natively — you can sell courses as WooCommerce products, and Sensei handles the lesson structure, drip scheduling, quizzes, and student progress. The integration is tight because they’re from the same ecosystem.
LearnDash is the most popular WordPress LMS. It has its own WooCommerce integration plugin, supports complex drip schedules, prerequisites between courses, certificates, and group management. It’s more feature-rich than Sensei but also more complex to configure.
Memberships + manual drip: WooCommerce Memberships (section 1.11) has a built-in content drip feature — you can schedule when specific pages or posts become available relative to the membership start date. For simple “unlock this page after 7 days” scenarios, this works without an LMS. But it lacks progress tracking, quizzes, lesson ordering, or a student-facing dashboard. It’s content access, not a course experience.
The decision: If you’re building a real course with lessons, progress tracking, and quizzes, you need an LMS (Sensei or LearnDash). If you’re gating a library of content that unlocks over time without structured progression, Memberships may be sufficient. If you’re selling a single downloadable file (an ebook, a PDF guide), you just need a downloadable product — no drip involved.
